  • Although the host has sophisticated antiviral signaling programs to inhibit viral replication, viruses seem to have evolved strategies to subvert these defenses. This arms race therefore provides an opportunity to understand how viruses evolve and develop possibilities to therapeutically target the host-virus interface to reduce the disease burden. We have recently identified a cellular factor SERINC5 that potently inhibits retroviruses. This host-factor has a broad spectrum activity and three different retroviruses (HIV, MLV and EIAV) have developed countermeasures to inhibit this host restriction. We are currently trying to understand such cell-intrinsic mechanisms of viral inhibition and investigating the existence of anti-retroviral barriers.
  • Based on the strengths in cellular engineering and assay development, our research group is also interested in developing innovative molecular technology enabling novel approaches to study, diagnose and treat diseases. We exploit the CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing technologies for our own research interests in viral pathogenesis, and in collaboration with experts within and outside of India. For development and exploitation of our technologies in other fields, we collaborate intensively. At the moment, our strategic technology development focuses on cellular engineering as a basis for the discovery and development of novel biopharmaceuticals.

Open Positions


The lab is inviting applications through “the SERB-National Post Doctoral Fellowship (N-PDF) program” and looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher who is interested in studying mechanistic aspects of cell-intrinsic restrictions to viruses, evolutionary aspects of virus biology, and improving genome editing platforms for developing disease models. Candidates not from biology backgrounds are also encouraged to contact with the proposal and their CV with cover letter by email to me at ajitg@iiserb.ac.in.


Desirable: Prior experience with cell/molecular biology techniques and analysis of next-generation sequencing data.
