Despite the host's intricate antiviral signaling programs designed to inhibit viral replication, viruses have evolved strategies to circumvent these defenses. This fascinating arms race offers unique opportunities to understand how viruses evolve and how we can target the host-virus interface to alleviate the disease burden. Recently, we introduced a new player in the host-virus interaction: Circular RNA. We found that viruses like HIV can co-opt host-encoded circular RNA to promote its own replication. In parallel to our studies on the fundamental aspects of retrovirus replication, we are also interested in harnessing viruses as effective cargo delivery vehicles. This enables us to explore eukaryotic gene functions through innovative combinations, including the use of modern technologies like CRISPR/Cas.
